SEEDS Summer school on Patent data analysis for economics

University of Ferrara, Italy, June 3-6, 2024

The deadline for submissions is on May, 6th 2024. Notification of acceptance is scheduled for May, 8th.

Programme

We are pleased to announce that the first SEEDS summer school on patent data analysis for economics will take place at the University of Ferrara, Department of Economics and Management, Italy, on June 3-6, 2024. The summer school is open to Ph.D. and post-doctoral students as well as more experienced scholars who want to explore the wealth of information provided by patent data and their potential for research activities. Indeed, the summer school is intended to guide the attendees through the items that compose patent data from raw data to the elaboration of more sophisticated statistics and indicators. Given the researcher orientation of the summer school, recent papers and milestones in the patent literature will be discussed.

Teaching activity

The lectures in the first three days (June 3-5) follow a structured approach that combines theory with practical application. The initial part focuses on theoretical concepts, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the principles underlying patent statistics. This theoretical groundwork serves as a foundation for the subsequent practical component of the lessons. The practical part is aimed at developing technical skills in patent data management and analysis. Through guided exercises and examples, students acquire the necessary proficiency to effectively navigate the complexities of patent statistics. This dual approach ensures a reinforcing learning process to managing and producing patent statistics.

A non-exhaustive list of the topics explored during the lectures includes: technological classification codes, citations, name disambiguation, address geo-localisation, legal events, text analysis, etc. In addition, a specific module on green, sustainable patents will be presented. On the final day (June 6) we will culminate the summer school with a workshop in which esteemed researchers will present recent papers showing the code, data and management practices that stand behind the empirical analysis.
